| Abstract/Description |
The ASAM Patient Placement and Clinical Justification training will introduce participants to the knowledge and skills required to make more informed patient placement decisions and to write clear, clinical justifications. Research on the evidence based practice of making patient placement decisions, also known as "choosing a level of care", and matching clients to treatment has indicated that mismatching patients to treatment (either under or over treating) decreases a client's successful engagement in treatment and leads to poorer treatment outcomes (Magura et.al., 2002; McKay et.al., 2000). |
| Goals |
The goal of the ASAM Patient Placement and Clinical Justification training is to develop and/or enhance the knowledge and skills of community based practitioners in their ability to 1) make appropriate patient placement decisions, and 2) provide clear, concise clinical justifications for those decisions, utilizing clinical data collected with the ASI and/or CASI. |
| Objective |
Upon completion of this training, participants should be able to: 1) understand the rationale and benefits of making patient placement decisions and writing clear, concise, and clinically defensible justifications; 2) identify the rationale and benefits of utilizing Uniform Patient Placement Criteria (i.e. American Society of Addiction Medicine - ASAM); 3) properly utilize the continuum of care and the six dimensions of assessment as defined by ASAM; and 4) understand the relationship between the assessment tools currently being used in the State (ASI and CASI) and patient placement decision-making |
| Organizational Outcomes |
Organizations with staff who implement the skills learned in this training will see an improvement in the decision-making and written justifications of their clinicians. As a result of improved matching of clients to treatment, organizations could see an increase in the initiation, engagement, and retention of clients in treatment. |
| Career / Professional Relevency |
The knowledge and skills required in order to make more informed and appropriate patient placement decisions and the ability to write clear, concise, clinical justifications is a much needed and marketable skill. Approximately 30 states use to varying degrees the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Patient Placement Criteria (PPC) to guide patient placement decisions (Mee-Lee, 2005), and as many as 40 states have utilization review mechanisms that involve matching clients to appropriate levels of care utilizing some form of Uniform Patient Placement Criteria (Gregoire, 2000). The state of Louisiana and many funding sources require that clinicians make the most informed and appropriate patient placement decisions and are able to write clear, concise, and clinically defensible justifications. |
